This means that you can sit around the table as a family and make some awesome homemade bird feeders.

Homemade bird food balls. Chop the nuts and fruit finely. Decide which dry ingredients you want to use and mix them together. Make small balls of peanut butter.

Push the seeds into the lard to blend them together, and the fat will bind the loose seed. Mix your bird seed and lard together in a large bowl. Deposit the balls into their usual, platformed bird feeders, preferably out of reach of squirrels.

Just be sure you use enough lard to bind the ingredients together so theyll form a block. Chop up the apple into small pieces and crumble some stale bread or stale cake. Carefully make a small hole in the bottom of a yoghurt pot.

Cut your lard into small chunks then, in a bowl, combine with your dry ingredients until the mixture sticks together. Thread string through the hole and tie a knot on the inside. Remove from the heat and stir in your dry ingredients a little at a time.

If you can, record your sightings in a nature journal. Two parts bird seed mix; Roll balls in sunflower seeds and raisins.

Keep watch to see which birds visit your fat balls. Roll them in your regular bird seed until they are all firmly stuck. Melt your suet or lard in a saucepan over a low heat.

Mix one part suet to two parts seed in a saucepan and gently heat, stirring until the fat melts. Fat balls make excellent winter food for birds. If needed, additionally divide the rolled birdseed/peanut butter balls into smaller ones.

Roll it into a ball and allow it to set. Use an ice cream scoop, or mould with your hands, into balls. Leave enough string so that you can tie the pot to a tree or your bird table.
